Here at The Recs we like to give back so in an act of complete selflessness, we blind taste-tested six Edinburgh Gin Liqueurs for you. Research at its finest!

Elderflower

Blind sniff and taste test with marks out of 10

The Recs SCD: Smells apple-like and tastes very sweet but not unpleasant – 7 out of 10.

The Recs RDC: Tastes and smells floral with a hint of apple – 7 out of 10.

 Thoughts when flavour was revealed

RCD: Not a big fan of elderflower as a taste in general but was pleasantly surprised – a pleasant drink.

SCD: Not as mimsy as you’d expect from an elderflower drink

How Edinburgh Gin describe it:

“A highly aromatic liqueur with an exquisitely sweet, floral bouquet.”

Orange Blossom & Mandarin

Blind sniff & taste test with marks out of 10

The Recs SCD: No smell. Tastes not too sweet but a bit medicinal, very faint flavour, possibly strawberries . Nice colour  – 5 out of 10.

The Recs RDC:  Smells very sweet not unlike Lucozade and has an undefined artificial taste – 4 out of 10.

 Thoughts when flavour was revealed

SCD: Not sure what Orange Blossom is or what it’s meant to taste to like. Can taste a hint of Mandarin…just.

RCD: Once you know it’s Mandarin you then taste it, however disappointing.

How Edinburgh Gin describe it:

“A sweet and citrusy gin liqueur which envelops and delights the senses.”

Raspberry

Blind sniff & taste test with marks out of 10

The Recs SCD: Smells jammy and definitely tastes of raspberries, not too sweet. Great colour – 8 out of 10.

The Recs RDC: Smells of raspberries and tastes of raspberries, a little too sweet for me – 6 out of 10.

 Thoughts when flavour was revealed

RCD: Surprise surprise, it’s Raspberry!

SCD: Exactly what it says on the tin, well on the bottle. If you like the idea of a raspberry liqueur, then you’ll love this!

How Edinburgh Gin describe it:

“Our intensely fruity liqueur, packed with the summer’s juiciest raspberries.”

Rhubarb & Ginger

Blind sniff & taste test with marks out of 10

The Recs SCD: Smells so rhubarby. The ginger notes offset the sweetness of the rhubarb. Lovely warming flavour – 8 out of 10.

The Recs RDC: Strong rhubarb smell and taste with a hint ginger. Right amount of sweetness to temper the sharpness of rhubarb  – 9 out of 10.

 Thoughts when flavour was revealed

RCD: Delicious

SCD: Oi, half of that’s mine, greedy!

How Edinburgh Gin describe it:

“A classic pairing, our Rhubarb & Ginger is a sweet, fruity liqueur balanced by a delicate warmth and spicy finish.”

Strawberry & Pink Peppercorn

Blind sniff & taste test with marks out of 10

The Recs SCD: Smells slightly peppery. Very “thick taste”, almost syrupy, good balance of flavours, like jam but not too sweet and very pleasant  – 10 out of 10.

The Recs RDC: Strong overwhelming smell of pepper. Has a definite taste of strawberries with the heat of pepper to reduce the sweetness of strawberries – 9 out of 10.

 Thoughts when flavour was revealed

SCD: You don’t get a huge amount of strawberry , which is good as Strawberry favour can be quite cloying after a while. This tastes more sophisticated and subtle. I love it.

How Edinburgh Gin describe it:

“A punchy combination of sweet and savoury that stimulates the senses.”

Apple & Spice

Blind sniff & taste test with marks out of 10

The Recs SCD: Smells of apples and cider. You can taste spice coming through with super strong apple – 9 out of 10.

The Recs RDC: Smells cinnamony and spicy – 9 out of 10.

 Thoughts when flavour was revealed

SCD: Cinnamon comes through which counterbalances the sweetness of the apple.

RCD: I could drink this all day, don’t tempt me!

How Edinburgh Gin describe it:

“An enticingly crisp liqueur, brimming with lively exuberance”
