EIF - When Prophecy Fails ★★★★

Netflix, HBO and Amazon streaming services are currently overflowing with documentaries about American cults, and that timing is no accident, as much of the nation at the moment seems to be ensnared in the tight grip of one giant cult of personality against all rational reason. As a result, no one need ponder the relevance of Edinburgh International Festival’s programming of When Prophecy Fails, a documentary-dance piece about history’s first UFO doomsday cult.

Groupwork founders Vicki Manderson, Finn den Hertog, and Lewis den Hertog create co-devised ensemble works with a very specific purpose: to mix pop culture with psycho-social phenomena. With When Prophecy Fails, they investigate a midwest American cult led by Marian Keech (real name: Dorothy Martin), a spiritualist who’s best known for her 1954 prediction of a catastrophic flood to be caused by extraterrestrial entities. She even chose a date: December 21st, a selection that must have seemed incredibly rude to all who were looking forward to celebrating Christmas. (Unsurprisingly, her neighbors and community did not take fondly to the group, which called themselves “The Seekers”.)

When the flood didn’t happen, the Seekers actually tried to double down on their recruiting efforts, and their communal response to an unraveling truth — cognitive dissonance on steroids — became the subject of a psychological study titled When Prophecy Fails, which is quoted intermittently during the show.

This well-designed production does an excellent, stylistic job of recreating all that happened. The five performers have strong presences, and the clean direction is particularly impressive. But what’s missing is the unexpected. The audience can easily predict what’s going to happen from the moment go; a few twists and turns would have added much to the overall experience. Also, there’s no examination of why Keech was driven to do what she did, nor why her followers felt so compelled to stick by her side. Without the deeper digging, the audience is presented with a historical anecdote solely on its face value, and Groupwork is clearly capable of more.

A stylistic and smart evocation of a mostly forgotten chapter of American history ★★★★ 4 stars
