Sam Lake: Aspiring DILF ★★★★

After an acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022, BBC New Comedy Award-nominated Sam Lake is back with his new show, Aspiring DILF.

In Aspiring DILF, Sam Lake discusses his fear of the gay man he may (or may not) become. Helping to curate that future, he is aided by an unusual duo of muses in his life – office bestie Claire and Hollywood star Stanley Tucci. This one-hour show follows the journey Sam is taking to follow the path of what he believes to be the last respectable form of a man, the Daddy, which he insists is certainly not to be confused with a mere ‘Dad’!

An upcoming comedian with a growing reputation built from his Fringe show in 2022 and a new-comedy nomination from the BBC to boot, it’s fair to say that expectations for Sam’s second solo show are high, and he doesn’t disappoint. Sam is a confident comedian with good rhythm to his set and some hilarious jokes. While some anecdotes fall more into ‘stories down the pub’ than stand up, he makes up for any momentary misgivings with buckets of charisma and likeability, making his aspirations of Daddy-dom a dead cert!

Aspiring DILF is very funny indeed, and with time and repetition on his side at the Fringe, the measure of Sam’s show will surely be realised.

Sam Lake is a DILG – a Daddy I’d Like to Giggle at – ★ 4-stars
