The show begins after a gentle preamble amongst the audience by Brain Cell number 64,928,480,327, aka Clive, (Joe Pike). While the thought of some pre-show faffing about at the Edinburgh Fringe may fill you with dread, in this case the reality was non-intrusive and really helped set the tone of the show. From the outset and throughout, the pin-sharp characterisations from these two performers is exemplary. Pike’s portrayal of the nervous, geeky, slightly-overbearing and highly-strung Clive never becomes too much. It skilfully navigates this varied comedy piece. Tom Hazelden is the perfect pairing to Pike with his loud, confident and laddish portrayal of Brain Cell number 12 (aka number 12), and together they are utterly hilarious from start to finish.
The show is filled to the brim with up-to-date gags and touches on everything from politics to languages, not forgetting a memorable physical montage scene which tugs at the heart strings. As well as the brilliant comedic timing, the narrative is interesting and cleverly put together. The pair’s rapport ensures that you feel invested as well as entertained. Those scientifically minded or with medical knowledge (or who speak French – you’ll see!) will find this show particularly amusing.
