Sir Peter Wright’s The Nutcracker – Birmingham Hippodrome ★★★★★

Fantasy with finesse in Sir Peter Wright’s production of the classic festive ballet ‘The Nutcracker’

The Nutcracker, a staple in Christmas entertainment since its premiere in December 1892, showcases the musical score by composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and a story adapted by Alexandre Dumas, enchanting audiences of all ages through the generations.  Even those with no interest in ballet or classical music are likely to be familiar with some of the show’s tunes, whether Trepak (Home Alone) or Dance of the Mirlitons (Cadbury’s memorable 70s and 80s advert).  The current run at the Hippodrome marks 35 years since Birmingham Royal Ballet first performed the production (created by Sir Peter Wright) there.

The tale begins on Christmas Eve, where the wealthy Stahlbaum family is holding a large party with many guests, including the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer.  He performs illusions and presents gifts to the children, with a special wooden nutcracker doll being given to Clara, daughter of the Stahlbaums.  That night she is unable to sleep with excitement and creeps downstairs only to discover fantastical creatures such as giant rats, who try to take the doll and kidnap Clara.  A battle ensues between the rats and some toy soldiers who have come to life before Clara is rescued and whisked away to magical lands where she meets people from all over the world.

From the moment the first curtain rises, it is evident that this is a truly sumptuous production.  John Macfarlane‘s set design and costumes are lavish, with spectacular special effects – a Christmas tree grows to epic proportions, rats scurry from a colossal smoking fireplace, and the set is transformed into a snowy winter wonderland.  At times the stage is full of people, and it is a spectacle to behold.  The classic nature of the ballet means that it is entirely without dialogue – any emotions, intentions, or reactions are conveyed through facial expressions, gestures, and movement.  The cast handle this very well, reminiscent at times of stars of silent movies..

Tchaikovsky’s timeless score is brought to life majestically by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, who interpret each section with verve, from the explosive joy of the aforementioned Trepak to the poignant beauty of the Grand Pas de Deux.  The skill of the musicians is ably matched by the technical ability of the dancers, whose standard is very high throughout.  The second act features characters from several nations, allowing for a diversity of dance styles to be explored, alongside the classic “tutus and tights” with which ballet is associated for many.  These contrasts enable the story to keep moving – with a variety of landscapes and characters, this production will keep the most casual viewer enrapt.

The Nutcracker is an excellent ballet, suitable for first-timers – full of sparkle, with some humour, fight sequences, and a lot of heart.  This production is a gift that keeps on giving, and if you’re looking for a show to banish the cold winter blues, put it on your Christmas list.
