Romy & Michelle The Musical Announces Leads

Get those “business woman specials” ready: Romy and Michele are taking their high-heeled, bedazzled friendship to Stage 42 from October. The 1997 cult-classic comedy movie is getting the full musical treatment this fall as Romy & Michele: The Musical premieres off Broadway.

The show is written by Robin Schiff, the same sharp pen behind the original film screenplay, ensuring the characters’ irreverent wit stays intact. The musical score comes from Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay (yes, the composing team behind Orange Is the New Black), promising an ‘80s-meets-’90s pop soundtrack that’s as bold as Romy’s miniskirts.

Stepping into those glittery platform heels this time around are Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde) and Kara Lindsay (Newsies, Wicked), a dream Broadway duo who can belt, dance, and bring heart to these two iconic oddballs.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion retains such public affection even after three decades, as it offers more than a nostalgic romp through ‘90s fashion (though those outfits deserve their own curtain call). It’s a heartfelt love letter to friendship: the sort that survives bad prom memories, cruel classmates, and ill-fated interpretive dance routines. It’s remains an affirmative celebration of late bloomers, of taking agency and rewriting your own story, and, of course, not taking life too seriously.

Previewing from October 14, this production should offer a fabulously fun night out this season. It’s not like they are inventing Post-its.
