Kevin Quantum: Anti-Gravity ★★★★

Kevin Quantum conducts an illusionary odyssey that seemingly defying the laws of physics

Fundamentally, magic should be all about defying scientific norms and conventions and certainly involve flying in the face of the laws of physics. Yet, what might happen when the worlds of magic and science collide? In Anti-Gravity, scientist and magician Kevin Quantum (a student of the
legendary Penn and Teller, no less) returns to Edinburgh to engineer a world where the rules of gravity are bent and broken in a series of seemingly impossible illusions.

In Anti-Gravity, Quantum’s stage is transformed into a lab where he has constructed a device that links to a parallel universe to achieve the seemingly unachievable; reversing gravity itself. The machine moving through different levels of reversed G-force provides cues to perform a series of slickly-presented illusions, ranging from slight of hand, through to apparent clairvoyance and mind control, often featuring willing – and not-so-willing – audience volunteers. Culminating in a gasp-inducing illusion – or was it?! – the show provides a fast-paced, cleverly-themed hour that certainly leaves the audience wondering “how does he do that?”

Not only is Quantum an extremely accomplished illusionist, he also possesses great skill when it
comes to engaging his audience – which ranges from older children through to mature adults – really making everyone feel part of the show. Add to that a great sense of comic timing, and you have all the components of a really enjoyable hour that is gloriously different to many other offerings on the Fringe, great thought those are. So, if you feel like defying the pull of more usual festival fare, Anti-Gravity certainly is a highly attractive option.

The pull of this polished illusionist is irresistible! ★★★★ 4-stars
