Karen from Finance is Out Of Office ★★★★

Karen From Finance is OOO features the corporate Queen of Melbourne, leaving the Manilla envelopes and stapler behind in her hilarious debut solo show

Karen from Finance’s life was fine. She was first to arrive and last to leave the office each day. The communal fridge would never run out of milk and the stationery cupboard was always stocked. Karen worked hard and played hard. Until now… Forced to take all her accrued annual leave at once, Karen from Finance is Out of Office and you can have front row seats to her rollercoaster journey.

The show’s tone is appropriately set opening with a very campy rendition of Dolly Parton’s song 9 to 5 and it is clear from the outset that busty bespectacled Karen is a woman who has devoted her life to the mundane cumming and goings you might recognise from any average office up and down the country (or in this case, Melbourne). The show is filled with the quick-witted comedy, lip-synching and costume & wig changes that we’ve come to expect from a RuPaul’s Drag Race Queen, Karen having placed runner-up in the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under.

The real highlight of this ‘Drag Show’ though is that it’s more than just a Queen being witty and lip-synching to a few hits. Out Of Office has a storyline and production – and you are invited to sympathise and understand the ‘inner break-room Karen’ as well as laugh (and scream) along to her antics. Much of what Karen portrays does, at times, run a little close to home though, especially if you’ve ever been guilty of waking up somewhere you don’t fully recognise after a big night out, but it’s that relatability which makes this show even more hilarious.

The wild ovation at the end of this packed-out show said it all really…

Now, be a Darl’ and take down these minutes: Karen from Finance is Out of Office deserves ★★★★ (4 fabulous stars) and quite possibly a pay rise!
