Jack Goes to Therapy: A (Somewhat) Romantic Comedy ★★★★

Jack Goes To Therapy, a one-man romantic comedy, explores love, loss and everything in between.

Anyone who has had their heart broken will doubtless be able to relate to Jack Goes to Therapy, Canadian Zac Williams’ semi-autobiographical take on trying to get over the love of your life. On the cusp of turning thirty, kindergarten teacher Jack has his heart broken when his boyfriend leaves him for the guy they had a threesome with, and tries to heal himself by going on an endless series of dates.

Featuring all the typical components of a classic romcom, Jack Goes to Threapy’s cast of characters isn’t especially original. There’s the supportive best friend, the toxic bachelor roommate who Jack hides his sexuality from, the children asking awkward questions and the colleague who can’t resist poking about in his business.

What makes the show so winning, though, is Williams himself. A gifted storyteller, he skillfully flits between the multiple roles and effortlessly fills the one-hour running time by keeping things moving at a brisk pace. With a well-measured balance of laughs and pathos, Jack Goes to Therapy is a delight that truly deserves to find an audience.

An hour well spent on Jack’s therapy couch – ★★★★ 4 stars
