A themed stand-up show can sometimes feel trapped by its own premise, but Chris Forbes avoids that pitfall completely in Father Christmas. What begins as a warm, mischievous celebration of festive rituals gradually reveals itself as something far more personal, with Forbes using Christmas as a lens through which to explore family, grief and the strange ways memory reshapes familiar traditions.

The first half is packed with sharp, highly relatable observations: childhood letters to Santa, the Argos catalogue, family rows over decorating the tree, Christmas crackers, charades and the annual battle to keep festive rituals alive. Forbes has a keen eye for the absurdities of family life, and his affection for the season is infectious. Even the most specific anecdotes feel universal because the emotions behind them are instantly recognisable.

The tone shifts when Forbes reveals that his family suffered a personal bereavement one Christmas Day, but crucially the show does not abandon comedy in favour of solemnity. Instead, humour becomes part of the way the family processes grief. Inappropriate jokes, funeral anecdotes and terrible Christmas-cracker gags are not used to diminish the loss, but to honour a relative who clearly taught Forbes the value of laughing at life’s darkest moments. That balance is handled with real skill, and the recurring references to Christmas songs and traditions gain extra emotional force as the show progresses.

What makes Father Christmas work so well is that it never suggests grief can be neatly resolved. Traditions change, families grow, new memories are made, but absence remains. Forbes understands that beautifully, while still finding room for big laughs throughout. Funny, heartfelt and finely judged, this is a show that proves commitment to a theme need not weigh comedy down when it is handled with this much warmth.
