Mythos: Ragnarok ★★★★★

Mythos: Ragnarok gives a unique and high-impact take on Norse mythology – proving the Fringe can always surprise.

The epic drama of Norse mythology as told by a troupe of professional wrestlers. Sounds like the stuff of pure pantomime. And, as it turns out, The Mythological Theatre’s take on the story of gods Odin and Loki, and their battles in the Nine Worlds, isn’t too far removed from that hunch. Albeit it’s a rather brutal, snarling form of “he’s behind you”.

If that sounds patronising, it’s not intended as such. The best pantos are a skilled mix of storytelling, performance, laughs, action and audience participation. And on all these counts, Mythos: Ragnarok scores high. The drama and intensity of the myths is retold faithfully and at a brisk pace, with well-judged comedic moments from a charismatic group of players. Excellent costumes, lighting and sound design demonstrate the thought and craft that has gone into this production.

This being a show largely based on physical performance, however, its combat scenes were always going to be its money shots. In turns surprising, shocking and hilarious, the skill and dexterity on display is seldom less than thrilling. No use of sound effects here – that’s the real sound of bodies being slammed against hard surfaces!

With participation from the raucous audience very much encouraged, Mythos: Ragnarok is an interactive, energetic experience throughout its 70 minute running time.

At show’s end, as the cast took its expected bow in front of a deserved standing ovation, main cast member and group lead Ed Gamester gave emotional thanks to both the audience and the Fringe for the welcome that they have received. Embraced by the rest of the cast, and loudly cheered on by the entire room, it was the most touching moment of this, and I’ll wager of any 2022, Fringe performance.

Mythos: Ragnarok is an adrenalin-pumping, tongue-in-cheek Fringe smash – ★★★★★ (5 stars) from The Recs (because we might be slightly scared of them)
